Scheuch brings CO2-capture into industrial practice

At the Kirchdorf cement works, Scheuch is currently operating a pilot plant for the direct capture of CO₂ from industrial flue gases. During a visit by Minister for Economic Affairs Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer and Governor Thomas Stelzer, it became clear just how much potential this technology holds for the decarbonisation of energy-intensive industries.

For Scheuch, CO₂ reduction begins where the emissions are generated: directly within the industrial process. Whilst there is currently intense debate about the transport, utilisation and storage of CO₂, the Upper Austrian environmental technology specialist is already working on a crucial first step – the capture of CO₂ from industrial flue gases.

During a visit to the Kirchdorf cement works in Upper Austria, Minister for Economic Affairs Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer and Governor Thomas Stelzer were able to see for themselves how far the development has progressed. There, Scheuch operates a pilot plant for CO₂ capture under real industrial conditions.

Experience in flue gas treatment as a competitive edge

In the building materials industry in particular, emissions arise that cannot be completely avoided. Reducing these emissions requires technologies that remove CO₂ directly from the flue gas stream.

Scheuch brings decades of experience in industrial flue gas treatment to bear in this area. This expertise forms an important foundation for high-performance carbon capture solutions and gives the company a technological edge.

“Our plant in Kirchdorf is already operational and is providing important insights under real industrial conditions. This enables us to lay the groundwork for developing a solution that can be used internationally, based on Austrian environmental technology expertise,” says Thomas Eberl, CFO of the Scheuch Group.

Stefan Scheuch, CEO of the Scheuch Group, also emphasises the importance of practical testing: “With the pilot plant in Kirchdorf, we are moving from development to industrial application. Our aim is to provide robust and scalable solutions for our customers worldwide.”

Technology from Upper Austria with international potential

The pilot plant at the Kirchdorf cement works demonstrates how long-standing expertise in industrial air pollution control can be translated into concrete solutions for CO₂ capture. This lays an important technological foundation for further industrial application.

The political and legal framework, which is currently being reshaped, is now crucial. It should facilitate investment and pave the way for larger-scale industrial applications, as well as the further use or storage of the captured CO₂. Scheuch stands ready to support companies on their journey towards a low-carbon future with tried-and-tested technology and comprehensive process expertise.
