Explosion protection

Certain construction techniques – safety measures

Among the steps that can be taken to avoid explosions are certain construction techniques that are classified as explosion proof or blast proof construction. In addition, the following precautionary safety measures should be considered:

Explosion pressure relief:

Pressure relief can be affected using so-called rupture disks or explosion flaps that release pressure build-ups into the area outside the plant.

Suppression of explosions:

Another option for preventing too great a pressure increase inside machinery is explosion suppression. This uses a detector system that first detects an explosion in its earliest stages and then introduces at great speed an extinguishing agent into the area requiring protection.

De-coupling measures:

De-coupling measures should be implemented in every plant to prevent an explosion that has already begun from advancing to and causing destruction in one or more additional areas of the plant. Such steps include technical measures to de-couple pipe systems using pressure relief pipes and the use of flame barriers, fast closing slide valves, and Ventex valves or locks.
